The Cadillac Ranch was created in 1974 by Doug Michels, Hudson Marquez, and Chip Lord, who belonged to the San Francisco-based art group, Ant Farm. The cars were selected to represent the evolution of style of the Cadillac tailfin feature from 1949 to 1963. The cars were moved in 1997 to a new location two miles to the west, on land owned by the same man, Stanley Marsh, who died in June, 2014. The Cadillac Ranch has a history of change, as the cars are often painted different colors and sprayed with graffiti, which has been encouraged to keep it as an art piece ever evolving.
